Samsung Expands Software R&D Operations

Samsung has expanded its R&D Operations in India by setting up a new Software R&D Centre at Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The Samsung India Software Centre (SISC), which was earlier housed at the Samsung manufacturing complex at Noida, has been moved to a new location at Noida as it goes for a major expansion programme this Year. The new SISC facility was inaugurated on site today by Mr. H B Lee, Regional President & CEO, Samsung South West Asia operations in the presence of Mr. R Zutshi, Dy MD, Samsung India ; Mr Frank Oh, Director – SISC; Dr Vikram Vij, Vice President – SISC and other senior Samsung India functionaries.

The Samsung India Software Centre, which was set up in October 2002 with 15 employees, today has 300 employees working for global software requirements in the areas of Analogue and Digital TVs, CDT and LCD Monitors, Camcorders, DVD Players, MP3 Players, Client Server based Displays, Notebook and Desktop PCs. By this year end, Samsung India Software Center plans to grow its team to 400 nos. and plans to take on more work in the areas of Digital TVs, Next Generation Wireless Technology (WiFi, WiBro etc.), Thin Clients and Home Network Solutions.

This Software Centre, which is one of Samsung's 16 Global R&D Centres is today poised to become the biggest overseas R&D Centre for Digital Media products. States Dr Vikram Vij , VP –R&D, Samsung India Software Center, "Over the past four and a half years, the role of SISC has evolved from project support for our Headquarter requirements to base IP development for key areas in TVs/ Monitors/ DVD Players and Camcorders. The mission of SISC is to create and provide Software solutions for the global Digital Media Business. SISC has recently played a leading role in developing Software solutions for the Company's just launched Bordeaux Art and Mosel Blaque series of LCD televisions as well as Software solutions for the television solutions for the Hospitality industry and Desktop Imaging Software solutions for Monitors. " We will be investing US$ 5 Million towards expanding the Operations of SISC in this Year and will focus on product development for worldwide market as well as value added features for Indian market", states Dr Vij. It has already applied for 25 patents so far. "We expect to file another 10-15 patents by the end of this year", states Dr Vij.

In addition to SISC, the Samsung R&D operations in India also include the Hardware R&D function, which is housed at the Samsung Noida Manufacturing Complex. Set up in the Year 2000, the Hardware R&D Centre focuses on customizing Samsung products for the Indian market as well as for the SAARC markets.
