December 28, 2007

Worldwide external controller-based (ECB) disk storage revenue totaled $3.9 billion in the third quarter of 2007, a 3.4 per cent increase over the same period in 2006. ECB disk storage revenues in India totaled $59.4 million in the third quarter of 2007, a record 76.3 per cent increase over the same period in 2006, according to Gartner.

EMC maintained the No. 1 spot overall, finishing the quarter at 25.8 percent market share (see Table 1). The Asia/Pacific (AP) region, excluding Japan , increased its revenue by 22.7 per cent year-over-year. The growth in AP is widely distributed amongst several countries, including India , Australia , Taiwan , and China . “Distributed growth is a positive indication of vendors' commitment in the region,” said Mr. Aman Munglani, principal analyst for Gartner's storage group. “While each country is unique, vendors are better positioned to leverage existing relationships”, he added.

“Q3 2007 was a strong quarter - not only was India the fastest growing ECB market globally, it was also the biggest quarter ever reported in India in terms of revenues,” said Mr. Munglani. “Every vendor in this space recorded a healthy year on year growth rate in Q3 2007”, added Mr. Munglani.

In India, EMC regained its leadership position with a market share of 30 per cent with all product lines showing growth over the previous quarter. The more than 100 per cent year-over-year revenue growth was primarily driven by the DMX series at the high-end. IBM grew close to 90 per cent on a year on year basis to total revenues of $12.9 million in Q3 2007. HP trailed EMC and IBM to occupy the third position in the Indian market, last quarter.
