Samsung has announced the launch of it Samsung HOPE Project, which aims to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged children by providing them quality education. Samsung aims to reach out to children across 100 villages in Tamil Nadu through Aid India, its selected partner and in Delhi /Uttar Pradesh through SMILE Foundation. Consumers too will get an opportunity to participate in this educational initiative and support this movement. For every Galaxy Note sold in the period between February and June 2012, Samsung will contribute Rs.100 towards supporting the selected projects.

“The Samsung HOPE Project that we are launching today is aligned with our Global Hope for Children program that seeks to bring attention to the worldwide need for childhood education and healthcare. Through the Samsung Hope Project, not only do we aim to provide good quality education to under privileged children, but also create an environment which is conducive to their overall growth and development. By using modern teaching methods and available technology, our objective is to ensure that children are encouraged to go to schools and are mainstreamed. We are pleased to partner with Aid India and Smile Foundation and are confident that together we will be able to make a difference”, states Mr. B. D. Park, President & CEO, South West Asia HQ & Managing Director , Samsung India Electronics Pvt. Ltd.

Samsung had constituted a high profile jury to evaluate and select partners for this program. The jury was headed by Dr. Raghunath A. Mashelkar, former Director General of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and currently the President of Indian National Science Academy (INSA); Mr. Arun Kapur , Executive Director of Learn Today, Mr. Kishor A Chaukar, Managing Director of Tata Industries Limited (TIL), Ms. Anu Aga , Director on Board of Thermax Group and Mr. Anand Nayak Executive VP , HR from ITC Ltd. The Jury carefully scrutinized and evaluated all the nominations received and selected AID India and SMILE Foundation as the Partners for this initiative, based on the HOPE Project guidelines.

To strengthen the program and create consumer support for the movement, Samsung will contribute Rs 100 from the sales of every Galaxy Note sold in the period between February – June 2012. “Our objective is to promote the cause of education for children as widely as possible and encourage more people to join this movement. So while Samsung India will support the Project through the sales of its flagship Galaxy Note, consumers can even support our partners directly and make the Program stronger .” states Mr. Ranjit Yadav, Country Head-Mobile & IT, Samsung Electronics.

AID India – Samsung SuperKidz Program
AID India was founded in July 1997 and has been working in Tamil Nadu for the last 14 years in the field of education. Founded by IIT and BITS alumni, it works closely with the Government and UNICEF to develop curriculum and methodologies to improve education quality in schools. Under the ‘Samsung SuperKidz Program’ children from 100 villages in Tamil Nadu will benefit from AID India’s vast experience and will learn Tamil, English, Math and Science through innovative teaching techniques. Comprehensive skill assessment and monitoring, individual attention, special focus for weaker students and regular interaction with parents, will ensure that the development of each child is taken care of. Through the program, children will be enabled to improve their grades and those that are drop outs are encouraged to re-join the formal school system.

Smile Foundation Mission Education Program
Mission Education, established in the year 2003, is the flag ship programme of Smile Foundation. The programme reaches out to more than 12000 children across 19 states in India. The program ensures education of under privileged children from backward rural/ urban locations. It aims at imparting education to bring changes not only in the amount of knowledge gained but also in the abilities to think and acquire habits, skills and attitude which characterize an individual who is socially accepted and adjusted. Through Samsung’s support, Smile Foundation will reach out to children at two centres in New Delhi and Noida. The program will enrol children in the age group of 6-16 years in bridge courses and enable them to get mainstreamed in formal schools. Children will learn subjects including Maths, Science, English and EVS. To ensure their overall development, regular events, extra-curricular activities and medical aid will also be provided.

Speaking on the occasion, Sharmila Tagore who is the Company’s ambassador for the cause of education stated, “An initiative like the Samsung Hope Project becomes significant in view of the fact that there is clearly a need to focus on not just reaching basic education to more and more children and mainstreaming them , but also for ensuring that the quality of the education imparted is improved and the school drop out rate is controlled well . In this regard the Government, development agencies, NGOs and the private sector need to work together much more closely to reach out to the needy and support the deserving. By helping more and more children get mainstreamed, we will create a wider and healthier pool of educated children who will shape the next wave of India’s growth.”

Samsung Hope Project represents Samsung Corporate Social responsibility initiatives in the area of Education, Culture, Community Development and Sports. Some of the Company’s initiatives in the area of education include running e- learning centers in different parts of the country; Samsung Wheels of Hope, a mobile computer lab that gives children studying in government and government aided schools access to internet and Notebooks/tablets and Scholarship programs. Samsung is also running the Samsung Innovation Award at the IIT, Delhi. The current Hope Project initiative seeks to further strengthen the Company’s efforts to reach quality education to more underprivileged children.

Samsung Hope for Children Project: Since our founding in 1969, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has worked with passion and purpose to actively serve as a generous and ethical corporate citizen everywhere we operate. Samsung Hope for Children program was launched globally to bring attention to the worldwide need for childhood education and healthcare. By supplying Samsung products, lending our expertise and providing financial support, we’re able to give thousands of children in communities around the world access to education, mentorship, leadership skills and life-saving medical treatment.

Juniper Networks has released findings today from its 2011 Mobile Threats Report, showing that mobile malware has reached a new stage of maturation. The report, conducted by the Juniper Networks Mobile Threat Center – the only threat center in the world devoted exclusively to mobile security research – is one of the largest first-hand quantitative research studies of its kind.

Top findings from Juniper’s 2011 Mobile Threats Report are evidence of accelerating attacks on mobile devices:

There is more malware than ever before. 2011 saw a record number of mobile malware attacks – particularly to the Google Android platform.

Mobile malware has gotten smarter. Cybercriminals continue to hone their craft by finding new ways to exploit vulnerabilities and human behavior for profit across all mobile platforms and devices.

The barrier to entry is low. Data shows an evolution from sophisticated, complex and deep technical attacks to schemes that are lightweight, social and able to deliver fast profits. As mobile users download more applications than ever before, applications themselves are becoming the “killer app” for hackers and the most popular way to compromise devices.

The Juniper Networks Mobile Threat Center examined more than 790,000 applications and vulnerabilities across every major mobile device operating system to inform its 2011 Mobile Threats Report.

Additional Key Findings Include:

From 2010 to 2011, the Juniper Networks Mobile Threat Center identified a 155 percent increase in mobile malware across all mobile device platforms.

In the last seven months of 2011 alone, malware targeting the Android platform jumped 3,325 percent.

In 2011, spyware and SMS Trojans comprised the vast majority of malware targeting mobile devices, at 63 percent and 36 percent respectively.

Research into Apple iOS security remains limited given the closed nature of its platform; but in 2011, security researchers were successful in getting an unapproved application onto the Apple App Store.

A new attack method dubbed “Fake Installers” was the fastest growing type of malware found in 2011. Fake Installers trick victims into unknowingly paying for pirated versions of popular applications that are normally free.

In addition to the rising threat of malware, consumers and enterprises remain susceptible to a very low-tech risk: lost or stolen mobile devices. In the last year alone, nearly one in five users of Junos Pulse Mobile Security Suite – Juniper’s comprehensive mobile device security and management solution – required a locate command to identify the whereabouts of a mobile device.

HP has introduced new services that enable enterprises to integrate, manage and govern complex multivendor environments, resulting in reduced risk and costs.

According to Gartner Research, “business groups are adopting cloud 2.5 times faster than IT groups. Procurement of cloud services from external suppliers by business groups separate from services developed by IT is creating ‘supplier sprawl.”

“Managing and measuring complex IT sourcing environments in terms meaningful to the business has become a pressing need for the CIO, particularly with the recent and rapid adoption of cloud computing,” said Will Cappelli, research vice president, Gartner. “An end-to-end management solution to govern and measure multisourced IT environments will be critical to gaining timely service performance and financial information in order to optimize the IT supply chain and avoid the costs of supplier sprawl.”

The new HP Service Integration and Management offering gives enterprises a single view into multisourced services, including cloud services, whether provisioned internally by IT or externally by non-IT business groups. The offering provides organizations with transformational consulting services, including a roadmap that identifies required processes for improving management and performance of multiple supplier environments.

By providing a standard IT architecture and integration model for all services, HP Service Integration and Management helps clients create an agile and easily governed IT environment. Additional benefits include:

— Improved service performance by tracking performance status against operating budgets and business goals. HP Service Integration and Management helps clients improve availability and management of services by proactively monitoring service health with real-time visibility into the performance of all services.

— Decreased service disruption and related business risks by rapidly identifying those suppliers responsible for critical service interruptions.

— Reduced IT maintenance costs through integration and centralization of multiple supplier services management.

“The lack of visibility into services delivered by multiple suppliers, including those from cloud providers, leads to inconsistent service levels across the organization and increases IT management risk and costs,” said Amit Chatterjee, Director, HP Software & Solutions, HP India. “Our new offering gives organizations the processes and tools needed for improved insight and better governance of all suppliers, while reducing complexity and cost.”

Visibility into multivendor environments
HP Service Integration and Management helps organizations develop the right supplier integration and management roadmap to achieve business goals by providing an overall topology of IT services as well as indicating how each service maps to different business objectives. With real-time visibility into business service performance, as well as the performance of relevant suppliers, clients also can proactively monitor their service delivery.

In combination with the HP IT Performance Suite of software, HP Service Integration and Management helps clients establish an enterprise-wide governance and business service operating model that improves IT performance, simplifies management and meets compliance requirements. At the center of the offering is the HP Capability Framework, a reference model used to streamline and reduce the complexity of global multivendor IT environments and the cost of supplier sprawl.

The HP Service Integration and Management Roadmap Service helps clients simplify management of multiple suppliers to reduce risks and costs associated with compliance regulations. The roadmap, developed by HP consultants, includes information about all of a client’s suppliers, including internal IT groups and external service providers. Once implemented, all suppliers are standardized on the same operating model so they can be held accountable for service level agreements.

Enhanced visibility into multivendor environments with HP Service Integration and Management helps businesses and governments in their pursuit of an Instant-On Enterprise. In a world of continuous connectivity, the Instant-On Enterprise embeds technology in everything it does to serve customers, employees, partners and citizens with whatever they need, instantly.

According to the Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast for 2011 to 2016, worldwide mobile data traffic will increase 18-fold over the next five years, reaching 10.8 exabytes per month — or an annual run rate of 130 exabytes — by 2016.

The expected sharp increase in mobile traffic is due, in part, to a projected surge in the number of mobile Internet-connected devices, which will exceed the number of people on earth (2016 world population estimate of 7.3 billion; source: United Nations). During 2011−2016 Cisco anticipates that global mobile data traffic will outgrow global fixed data traffic by three times.

The forecast predicts an annual run rate of 130 exabytes of mobile data traffic, equivalent to:

33 billion DVDs.

4.3 quadrillion MP3 files (music/audio).

813 quadrillion short message service (SMS) text messages.

An exabyte is a unit of information or computer storage equal to 1 quintillion bytes.

This mobile data traffic increase represents a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 78 percent spanning the forecast period. The incremental amount of traffic being added to the mobile Internet between 2015 and 2016 alone is approximately three times the estimated size of the entire mobile Internet in 2012. The following trends are driving these significant increases:

More Streamed Content: With the consumer expectations increasingly requiring on-demand or streamed content versus simply downloaded content, mobile cloud traffic will increase, growing 28-fold from 2011 to 2016, a CAGR of 95 percent.

More Mobile Connections: There will be more than 10 billion mobile Internet-connected devices in 2016, including machine-to-machine (M2M) modules — exceeding the world’s projected population at that time of 7.3 billion. (One M2M application is the use of wireless networks to update digital billboards. This allows advertisers to display different messages based on time of day or day-of-week and allows quick global changes for messages, such as pricing changes for gasoline).

Faster Mobile Speeds: Mobile network connection speed is a key enabler for mobile data traffic growth. More speed means more consumption, and Cisco projects mobile speeds (including 2G, 3G and 4G networks) to increase nine-fold from 2011 to 2016.

More Mobile Video: Mobile users want the best experiences they can have and that generally means mobile video, which will comprise 71 percent of all mobile data traffic by 2016.

Enhanced Computing of Devices: Mobile devices are becoming more powerful and thus able to consume and generate more data traffic. Tablets are a prime example of this trend generating traffic levels that will grow 62-fold from 2011 to 2016 — the highest growth rate of any device category tracked in the forecast. The amount of mobile data traffic generated by tablets in 2016 (1 exabyte per month) will be four times the total amount of monthly global mobile data traffic in 2010 (237 petabytes per month).

The Cisco study also projects that 71 percent of all smartphones and tablets (1.6 billion) could be capable of connecting to an Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) mobile network by 2016. From a broader perspective, 39 percent of all global mobile devices (more than 4 billion), could be IPv6-capable by 2016.

Impact of Mobile Devices/Connections

The increasing number of wireless devices and nodes accessing mobile networks worldwide is the primary contributor to traffic growth. By 2016, there will be more than 8 billion handheld or personal mobile-ready devices and nearly 2 billion machine-to-machine connections, such as GPS systems in cars, asset tracking systems in shipping and manufacturing sectors and medical applications for making patient records more readily available.

Smartphones, laptops and other portable devices will drive about 90 percent of global mobile data traffic by 2016.

M2M traffic will represent 5 percent of 2016 global mobile data traffic while residential broadband mobile gateways will account for the remaining 5 percent of global mobile data traffic.

Impact of Traffic Offload from Mobile Networks to Fixed Networks

To address the rise in demand for the mobile Internet, service providers are increasingly looking to offload traffic to fixed/Wi-Fi networks.

In 2011, 11 percent, or 72 petabytes, per month of total mobile data traffic was offloaded. By 2016, 22 percent, or 3.1 exabytes, per month of total mobile data traffic will be offloaded.

Without offloading, the 2011-2016 global mobile data traffic CAGR would be 84 percent instead of 78 percent.

Should all aspects of mobility be taken into consideration, such as cellular traffic, traffic offloaded from cellular networks and fixed/Wi-Fi traffic generated from portable devices, the total amount of mobility traffic would be more than four times the Cisco Mobile VNI forecast’s 2016 cellular traffic level.

In 2011, the sum of cellular traffic; cellular offload traffic; and fixed/Wi-Fi traffic from portable devices totaled 11.5 exabytes per month:

Cellular is 5.2 percent or 597 petabytes per month

Cellular Offload is 0.6 percent or 72 petabytes per month

Fixed/Wi-Fi is 94.2 percent or 10.9 exabytes per month

In 2011, fixed/Wi-Fi traffic was more than 18 times greater than cellular traffic.

In 2015, the sum of cellular traffic; cellular offload traffic; and fixed/Wi-Fi traffic from portable devices totaled 44.1 exabytes per month:

Cellular is 16 percent or 6.9 exabytes per month

Cellular offload is four percent or 2.0 exabytes per month

Fixed/Wi-Fi is 80 percent or 35.2 exabytes per month

In 2015, Fixed/Wi-Fi traffic will be more than five times greater than cellular traffic.

Key Regional Growth Projections

According to the updated forecast by Cisco, the following regions are experiencing the greatest growth.

Middle East and Africa will have the highest regional mobile data traffic growth rate with a CAGR of 104 percent, or 36-fold growth.

Asia-Pacific will have an 84 percent CAGR, or 21-fold growth.

Central and Eastern Europe will have an 83 percent CAGR, or 21-fold growth.

Latin America will have a 79 percent CAGR, or 18-fold growth.

North America will have a 75 percent CAGR, or 17-fold growth.

Western Europe will have a 68 percent CAGR, or 14-fold growth.

Impact of Faster Global Mobile Network Connection Speeds

The average mobile connection speed doubled last year and is expected to increase nine-fold by 2016. Mobile connection speeds are a key factor in supporting and accommodating mobile data traffic growth.

Source: Results from Cisco Global Internet Speed Test (GIST), part of the Cisco VNI program, and other independent speed test findings. The Cisco GIST application has more than 900,000 global users. These projections include cellular connection speeds only and are based on extrapolations from historical mobile network connection speed data.

Cisco Mobile VNI Forecast Methodology

The Cisco mobile VNI study relies upon independent analyst forecasts and real-world mobile data usage studies. Upon this foundation are layered Cisco’s own estimates for mobile application adoption, minutes of use and transmission speeds. Key enablers such as mobile broadband speed and device computing power are also factored into Cisco VNI projections and findings. A detailed methodology description is included in the complete report (see link below).

The results of the current forecast represent increased amounts of traffic for the years 2011 to 2015, reflecting faster-than-expected growth from the previous Cisco VNI mobile forecast released in February 2011. In last year’s study, 2011 mobile Internet traffic was forecast to grow at 131 percent. This year, actual mobile Internet growth 2011 was estimated to be 133 percent.

Suraj Shetty, vice president of product and solutions marketing, Cisco

“By 2016, 60 percent of mobile users — 3 billion people worldwide — will belong to the ‘Gigabyte Club,’ each generating more than one gigabyte of mobile data traffic per month. By contrast, in 2011, only one-half percent of mobile users qualified. This impressive growth in mobile traffic will be driven by more powerful devices, notably smartphones and tablets, using faster networks, such as 4G and Wi-Fi, to access more applications, particularly data-intensive video.”

Ray Mota, managing partner, ACG Research
“The Cisco Visual Networking Index has become the respected de facto standard in the industry as a validation for traffic growth. You know there is value in it when you see most of your competitors using it as part of their presentations. It is great to see Cisco putting particular focus on the mobile aspect, since it is such an increasingly important part of network traffic.”

Peter Jarich, service director, Current Analysis

“The Cisco VNI provides great insights and directions about the future of the market. Beyond the basic idea that IP traffic will be growing, operators are worried about which types of traffic will be growing. This concern makes the granularity and segmentation of the Cisco VNI critical. The Cisco VNI Global Mobile Forecast is vital because it gives us a more detailed look at what’s happening with mobile traffic, which is growing so quickly.”

John Byrne, research director, IDC

“The Cisco Visual Networking Index provides an invaluable reference source as we model increased network usage and converts that usage into revenue projections. The ability of the Cisco VNI to provide growth projections across multiple sources such as mobile video and online gaming is particularly useful.’
