Intel unveiled Dual-Core Xeon 7100 Series

September 11, 2006

Intel has unveiled eight new dual-core Xeon 7100 series processors designed for multi-processor servers. These processors are also socket-compatible with the currently shipping platform, speeding deployment and reducing qualification costs and validation times.

Earlier Intel had announced the availability of its mobile Core 2 Duo processor and said laptop manufacturers were shipping with Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processors inside. According to Intel, more than 200 Centrino Duo mobile technology-based designs from PC manufacturers, resellers and integrators around the world will incorporate the new Intel Core 2 Duo processor (formerly codenamed "Merom") this year.

The dual-core Xeon 7100 series processors boast more than 1.3 billion transistors and 16MB of shared cache in an innovative architecture that features Intel Cache Safe Technology for optimal reliability. Systems scaling to 32 processors will be available.

This series is compatible with the existing Intel E8501 chipset that was introduced last year and designed for dual-core processors. The 95 watt dual core option offers up to 40 percent less power consumption than the previous generation processor, providing increased power efficiency and lower energy costs, Intel claimed.

Supporting the Dual-Core 7100 series are the four-processor Intel SR4850HW4x and SR6850HW4x server systems, providing an optimal fit for database, ERP, enterprise class computing. The products will be sold through Intel's OEM partners. The availibility of the product will completely depend on the OEM's and the company does not plan to have any training programs for these products as of now.

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor, launched last month, has garnered widespread acclaim and is already shipping in the company's other premium platform for consumers, Intel Viiv technology-based entertainment PCs, the company said.

Laptops based on Centrino Duo mobile technology with the Intel Core 2 Duo processor also include the current Intel 945 Express chipset family and the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG network connection.

Intel Viiv technology-based entertainment PCs with the Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which started shipping earlier this month, also include the new Intel 965 Express Chipset family with support for high-definition playback and up to 7.1 surround sound.

Intel Xeon 7140N processor 3.33GHz 16MB 667MHz is priced at $1980, 7130N processor 3.16GHz 8MB 667MHz at $1391, 7120N 3.GHz 4MB 667MHz at $1177, and 7110N 2.50GHz 4MB 667MHz at $856.

The mobile version of the Intel Core 2 Duo processors T7600, T7400, T7200, T5600 and T5500 are priced at $637, $423, $294, $241 and $209, respectively in 1,000-unit quantities.
